Dogecoin block time and mining reward schedule

Dogecoin targets a new block every minute. That is the design goal, and the network has held to it for years. The block reward is fixed at 10,000 DOGE per block. No halvings. No supply cap. The issuance is constant.

A 1-minute block time is fast by Bitcoin standards. Bitcoin aims for 10 minutes. Ethereum, before its shift to proof-of-stake, targeted roughly 13 seconds. Dogecoin sits between them. The practical effect is straightforward: users see transaction confirmations more quickly than they would on Bitcoin. But speed comes with a caveat.

The 100-block maturity rule

Miners cannot spend their block rewards immediately. Dogecoin enforces a 100-block coinbase maturity period. That means a miner who finds a block must wait approximately 100 minutes before the 10,000 DOGE reward becomes spendable. This rule exists to prevent certain types of double-spend attacks that involve spending freshly mined coins before the network fully confirms the block. It is standard in proof-of-work chains. Bitcoin has a similar rule, though its maturity period is 100 blocks as well - which, at 10 minutes per block, works out to about 16.7 hours. Dogecoin's version is shorter in wall-clock time but identical in block count.

DigiShield Difficulty Adjustment

Dogecoin's block time stability relies on the DigiShield algorithm. DigiShield adjusts mining difficulty every block. Not every 2016 blocks like Bitcoin. Not every two weeks. Every single block, if needed. The algorithm looks at the timestamp of the previous block and compares it to the target time. If the block arrived faster than one minute, difficulty goes up slightly. Slower than one minute, difficulty goes down.

This matters because Dogecoin is merge-mined with Litecoin. A large portion of Dogecoin's hashrate comes from Litecoin miners who also mine Dogecoin using AuxPoW. That hashrate can fluctuate significantly. When Litecoin is more profitable, some miners might point fewer resources at Dogecoin. DigiShield compensates within a few blocks. The difficulty recalibrates quickly. Without it, block times would drift wildly whenever hashrate shifted. They do not.

What faster blocks actually mean

One-minute blocks are good for user experience. A merchant who waits for six confirmations on Bitcoin must sit through roughly an hour. The same six confirmations on Dogecoin take about six minutes. That is a concrete difference.

But finality is not purely a function of time. It is a function of cumulative work. Bitcoin's six-confirmation standard exists because the probability of a reorganization beyond that depth becomes negligible given the computational power required. Dogecoin's chain is secured by less total hashrate than Bitcoin. That matters. A 60-block reorganization on Dogecoin is far more plausible, in absolute terms, than a 6-block reorganization on Bitcoin. A merchant accepting Dogecoin should think about this. More confirmations are prudent. The exact number depends on the value transacted and the merchant's risk tolerance. But the rule of thumb "six blocks means safe" that works for Bitcoin does not transfer cleanly.

Supply Implications

The fixed 10,000 DOGE block reward is not going to change. Dogecoin has no halving schedule. It produces approximately 14.4 million DOGE per day, every day. That is inflationary in nominal terms. In percentage terms, the inflation rate declines as the total supply grows, but the absolute number of new coins entering circulation remains constant. This was a deliberate design choice. It rewards long-term miners and keeps transaction fees low as a share of total miner revenue. It also means Dogecoin will never be scarce in the sense that Bitcoin is.

Note on Dogecoin20 (DOGE20): As of August 31, 2026, a separate token named Dogecoin20 exists on Ethereum. Its contract is 0x2541A36BE4cD39286ED61a3E6AFC2307602489d6. It trades on Uniswap with a price of $0.000001367 and a market capitalization of approximately $191,407. It is not the same asset as the original Dogecoin. The on-chain activity is minimal - one transaction in the prior 24 hours. Liquidity on the pair is about $48,400. No further information about this token's team, roadmap, or future plans is available.
