What actually happens to your order when there is no buyer on the other side
Your order simply sits on the exchange's order book, unfilled, until either a buyer appears or you cancel it. No trade occurs, no tokens move, and no fees are charged until a match happens.

Status: waiting for your deposit
You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.
The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. doge2onsol.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.
Why orders can stall
Every swap on a decentralized exchange requires two willing parties: someone selling and someone buying at an agreed price. When you place a market order to sell a low-liquidity token, the system looks for open buy orders at or near the current price. If none exist, or if the few that exist are far below your ask, your order will not execute.
This is not a bug. It is how order books work. Liquidity is the measure of how many buyers and sellers are active at any given moment. A token with thin liquidity may have only a handful of buy orders, each for a small amount. If you try to sell more than those orders can absorb, only the portion that matches will go through. The remainder stays on the book.
What you see on the screen
When you submit a swap through the exchanger, it queries the underlying DEX for available liquidity. If the system cannot find enough buy-side depth, it will show you an estimated price impact - the difference between the current price and the price you would actually get given the available orders. If the impact is very high, the swap may fail outright, and you will receive a "no route found" or "insufficient liquidity" error.
If the swap partially executes, your wallet will show the sold tokens removed and the received tokens added, but only for the filled portion. The unfilled remainder stays in your wallet, unsold. You are not charged any network fee for the unfilled part, but you did pay gas for the transaction that attempted the swap.
The danger of assuming a fill
The real risk is not the stalled order itself. It is what happens if you assume the order will eventually fill and walk away. A buy order might appear minutes later, at a much lower price, and your sell will execute at that worse rate. Or the token's price could crash while your order sits idle, and when a buyer finally arrives, you take a larger loss than you anticipated.
In extreme cases, the token's liquidity pool can be drained or rug-pulled while your order is live. You then hold tokens that can no longer be sold at any price. The exchange cannot help you - it only routes orders; it does not guarantee that a counterparty exists.
How this connects to swapping out of memecoins
If you are trying to move from a low-liquidity memecoin into a stable asset or a more liquid token, this is the moment where many people get stuck. The hub page "Swapping in and out of memecoins" covers the broader strategy of planning your exit before you enter. The specific problem of vanishing buyers is why that planning matters. You cannot always sell when you want to, even if the price looks favorable.
What you can do
- Check the token's order book depth before you submit. Most DEX explorers show the top buy and sell orders.
- Use limit orders instead of market orders. A limit order lets you name your price and wait. It will not fill at a worse rate, but it may never fill at all.
- Break a large sell into smaller pieces. Smaller orders are more likely to find matching buyers.
- Cancel any order that has not filled within a few minutes and reassess. The liquidity situation may have changed.
Orders do not expire on their own on most DEXs. They stay until filled or cancelled. If you forget about an open order, it can fill days later at a price that no longer makes sense for you. The system will not remind you.
